FoamBloxx: Conquering the Market with Plant-Based and Recycled Foam

FoamBloxx wants plastic foam to be made exclusively from plant-based or recycled raw materials in the future. The Lelystad-based startup is building a new factory for its ECOfoam, a foam made from at least 50% bio-based or recycled materials, with the goal of eventually making it entirely from them.

Phoenix Metals: Extracts Vanadium from Tata Steel’s Steel Slag for Safer Batteries

The European steel industry generates 16 million tonnes of steel slag each year, including 650,000 tonnes from Tata Steel Netherlands. Phoenix Metals can recover valuable materials from the slag, including vanadium, manganese and carbon-free calcium. The Dutch startup is building a pilot plant in IJmuiden to prove the process can work at scale.

Rodenburg: Drives Transition to Green and Biobased Chemistry

Rodenburg has been producing bioplastics from potato starch for 25 years, supplying major clients like Mars, as well as festivals and mussel beds. With its subsidiary Tony Starch, the company will also manufacture chemicals for hundreds of products that currently rely on oil, ranging from sanitary pads to bandages. Additionally, the company has plans to construct a large campus for startups and other businesses focused on green, biobased chemistry.

Alucha Extracts Lime from Paper Waste for Use in Paint, Glue, and Plastic

Paper waste is full of calcium carbonate, a type of lime, which can still be effectively used in paint, paper, glue, rubber, or plastic. The Dutch scale-up Alucha extracts this substance from paper sludge to help large companies like Essity, AkzoNobel, Dyka, and Bostik reduce their CO2 emissions and become more circular. The construction of a new demo plant can quickly commence once the company secures its funding completely.
