BioBased Circular: Toward a Natural Materials Cycle
The BioBased Circular growth fund program has been in operation since 2024. An initiative led by Groene Chemie, Nieuwe Economie, BioBased Circular aims to transition the Netherlands toward climate-neutral materials.
This program is establishing a new sector that will produce plastics, synthetic materials, and construction materials that rival current options in quality, appeal, and price—with one key difference: they replace fossil-based carbon compounds with plant-based alternatives.
Over the next few years, BioBased Circular will develop five industrial-scale production chains. These chains are strategically selected so that the insights gained will also benefit future production chains. The focus areas in the coming years include:
- Biobased plastics from lactic acid
- Biobased polyester from sugar beets
- Biobased resins for the construction and furniture industries
- Biobased paints, coatings, and insulation materials from plant-based residues
- Biodegradable biopolymers from wastewater
