Dare to Be Circular in Bio-Based Circular
09-03-2023
At the annual event of the Brightlands Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (BISCI) on Thursday, March 2, titled Dare To Be Circular, the growth fund application for BioBased Circular received strong support.
During the breakout session on Chemistry, the panelists Guy de Sevaux (Invest-NL), Anton van Beek (Dow Chemical Company), Loek Radix (Chemelot), and Marc Spekreijse (Circulair Plastics NL) discussed the role of the government and society in a circular economy. They emphasized that we must create products without causing emissions in a circular supply chain. In the chemical industry, 30% of emissions occur during the production of the product, while the remaining 70% is contained within the product itself. This highlights the significant role that the circular aspect of chemical products plays in the product lifecycle. Furthermore, the scale at which circularity must be applied in the chemical industry is immense. Today's value is not the same as tomorrow's value, and thus companies must continually evaluate their value propositions. BioBased Circular (BBC) is a proposal for the Growth Fund (NGF) which promises to make important strides in the area of circularity within the chemical industry. The aim of the BBC program is to establish at least 5 'value circles' on a large scale for biobased materials in the Netherlands. This includes biobased raw materials (from both national and international sources), new chemical building blocks, biobased materials, circular design of applications/products, reuse and recycling, logistics, and all supporting activities (such as financial support and techno/eco/social evaluation).
